Paul insiste ensuite sure les devoirs des fidèles envers tous les hommes éloignés de l'Evangile, par ce que c'était là un témoignage puissant rendu à la foi que ces derniers méconnaissaient encore.
En traçant ce sombre tableau de la vie morale des hommes encore étrangers à toute action de Dieu sur leur conscience, Paul n'hésite pas à s'y comprendre lui-même. C'est qu'il sait par son expérience qu'aussi longtemps que le péché règne en maître sur notre cœur, il n'y a aucune des manifestations de la corruption humaine dont nous puissions nous croire incapables.
Il ne faut point connaître son propre cœur, ou vouloir apprécier de telles paroles selon les principes de la morale relâchée du monde, et non à la lumière de la loi spirituelle et sainte de Dieu, pour les trouver exagérées.
- Du reste, la place qu'elles occupent ici montre que l'apôtre les rattache à la fois aux exhortations qui précèdent, ( 3.1,2) comme motif de ces sérieux avertissements, et aux vérités qui suivent, ( 3.4-7) afin de faire ressortir d'autant mieux l'absolue nécessité de la rédemption et de la régénération qu'il rappelle à son disciple.
