Moïse dicte aux enfants d'Israël, la conduite qu'ils doivent tenir à l'avenir : ils doivent choisir entre la vie et la mort, la bénédiction et la malédiction, selon leur vœu d'obéissance aux commandements divins. Le péché tend à écourter la vie de chaque être humain et à dégrader la prospérité des peuples. Dieu était prêt à bénir abondamment la nation d'Israël, si toutefois cette dernière Lui portait tout son amour et consentait à Le servir.

L'impie ne peut compter que sur les vaines promesses du temps présent, mais le Seigneur, quant à Lui, inonde le cœur des croyants de Sa plénitude, bien plus que ne pourraient le faire les richesses de ce monde. Ceux qui se révoltent contre Dieu, pour se tourner vers les idoles, courent certainement à leur ruine.

Veillez donc particulièrement à ne pas gâcher votre vie. Tous ceux qui abandonnent Dieu, pour porter leur inclination vers les créatures, courent à leur anéantissement. Le côté le plus dramatique de cette situation, consiste principalement en cet abandon divin.
