1 à 10 L'Eternel accueillera les Israélites quand ils reviendront à lui de tout leur cœur. Le rejet ne sera pas le dernier mot de leur histoire. Sur le retour du peuple de son exil, voir déjà 4.29-31 et Lévitique 26.40-45.

La bénédiction. Il y aura eu aussi dans l'histoire passée d'Israël des périodes de bénédiction ; et s'il les prend à cœur, s'il remarque leur coïncidence avec les périodes de fidélité, il comprendra que ce n'est pas la fatalité qui préside à son histoire.

Ce chapitre annonce clairement la miséricorde que Dieu réserve pour Israël, dans les derniers jours. Ce passage rappelle les mises en garde prophétiques des deux chapitres précédents. Ces évènements prédits sont aujourd'hui accomplis : Jérusalem a été détruite par les Romains et les Juifs furent ensuite dispersés. Il ne peut y avoir aucun doute quant au déroulement des autres promesses à venir, qui attendent encore leur accomplissement. La nation juive doit à nouveau s'établir en Canaan et manifester ensuite sa foi pour Christ, peut-être dans un futur relativement proche*. Le langage utilisé dans ce texte est, dans une grande mesure, une promesse absolue ; il ne constitue pas simplement un engagement conditionnel, mais déclare ouvertement qu'un événement doit absolument avoir lieu.

L'Éternel en Personne s'engage à « circoncire leur cœur » ; quand la Grâce régénératrice aura chassé leur mauvaise nature, et quand l'Amour divin aura supplanté l'attrait du péché, les enfants d'Israël se repentiront alors certainement, ils se tourneront vers Dieu et Lui obéiront ; ce Dernier pourra alors se réjouir, en leur octroyant à nouveau tous les effets de Sa bonté. Le changement qui sera opéré en eux, ne sera pas visible uniquement à l'extérieur, par la manifestation de leur opinion ; il atteindra aussi leur âme. Cela produira en eux une haine totale du péché, un fervent amour pour Dieu, et une réconciliation avec ce Dernier, dans le Christ, Jésus ; ils l'Aimeront de tout leur cœur et de toute leur âme. Israël est encore loin de cet état d'esprit pour l'instant, mais il en était déjà ainsi pour les meurtriers de Jésus, qui, lorsque le jour de la Pentecôte arriva, se convertirent en l'espace d'une heure ! Il en sera ainsi au jour où Dieu manifestera Sa grande Puissance ; une nation naîtra en un jour*. L'Éternel saura hâter ces évènements.

Au même titre que les autres promesses précédentes, ce passage s'adresse non seulement à Israël, mais aussi à toute personne et à toute nation. Ces paroles peuvent nous assurer que si les plus grands des pécheurs se repentent et se convertissent, ils seront restaurés auprès de la faveur divine.

* Note du traducteur : ces lignes ont été écrites à la fin du dix-neuvième siècle, l'auteur ne savait donc pas que l'état d'Israël serait fondé en 1948, en un jour !

      37 They will stumble over one another, as it were before the sword, when no one pursues: and you will have no power to stand before your enemies.
      38 You will perish among the nations, and the land of your enemies will eat you up.

      46 These are the statutes, ordinances and laws, which Yahweh made between him and the children of Israel in Mount Sinai by Moses.

      29 But from there you shall seek Yahweh your God, and you shall find him, when you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul.
      30 When you are in oppression, and all these things have come on you, in the latter days you shall return to Yahweh your God, and listen to his voice:

      20 Yahweh will not pardon him, but then the anger of Yahweh and his jealousy will smoke against that man, and all the curse that is written in this book shall lie on him, and Yahweh will blot out his name from under the sky.
      21 Yahweh will set him apart to evil out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant that is written in this book of the law.
      22 The generation to come, your children who shall rise up after you, and the foreigner who shall come from a far land, shall say, when they see the plagues of that land, and the sicknesses with which Yahweh has made it sick;
      23 and that the whole land of it is sulfur, salt, and burning, that it is not sown, nor bears, nor any grass grows therein, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which Yahweh overthrew in his anger, and in his wrath:
      28 and Yahweh rooted them out of their land in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as at this day."
