La fille de Babylone : la population babylonienne personnifiée, au sein de laquelle Israël exilé avait été répandu.

Echappe-toi. Un grand nombre d'Israélites n'avaient pas profité de l'édit de Cyrus pour rentrer dans leur patrie ; ils avaient été retenus en Orient par leurs intérêts, l'amour de leurs propriétés, les privations qu'ils redoutaient, et surtout, probablement, par leur manque de zèle pour la cause de Dieu. C'est à ceux-là que s'adresse le prophète, en les invitant à fuir promptement une terre que les châtiments de Dieu vont frapper.

L'événement ne tarda pas à justifier ce conseil. L'histoire nous apprend qu'à la suite de deux grandes révoltes la ville de Babylone fut prise deux fois tôt après. Comparez l'inscription de Darius trouvée à Béhistûn (de la cinquième année de son règne), qui raconte ces faits. Les Juifs restés en Babylonie durent avoir beaucoup à souffrir des troubles de cette période.
