Ainsi, dans la terre d'Israël, naîtra une génération admirable de sainteté, de force et de beauté.

On se demande ce qui, à la suite du retour de l'exil, a pu attirer l'attention du prophète sur la Grèce. Mais si l'on se rappelle le sens de la vision du chapitre 6, où nous avons vu le jugement divin, sous l'image des deux premiers groupes de chevaux, se diriger vers la Babylonie et vers la Perse, nous comprendrons qu'après la défaite de ces deux ennemis du règne de Dieu en Orient, le regard du prophète se tourne vers l'Occident, où il rencontre Javan comme le principal représentant de l'humanité païenne et hostile au règne de Dieu dans ces contrées. Et s'il avait connaissance de la prophétie, de Daniel sur les quatre monarchies, il devait bien savoir qu'à la suite du lion babylonien et de l'ours persan se lèverait le léopard de Javan. Au moment même où Zacharie parlait, le roi Darius préparait sa grande expédition contre la Grèce ; ce pays devenait ainsi l'un des facteurs les plus importants de l'histoire. En tout cas, l'essentiel est que, désormais, la lutte du règne de Dieu contre la puissance terrestre et le paganisme se présente ici comme dirigée, non plus vers l'Orient, mais vers l'Occident. Et si nous recherchons dans l'histoire l'accomplissement de ce tableau, ne le rencontrerons-nous pas dans cette lutte héroïque d'Israël avec la puissance gréco-syrienne, par laquelle il maintint la religion de Jéhova et la conserva pour le monde, tout en recouvrant son indépendance politique ? Cette époque des Maccabées ne fut pas seulement celle de la lutte d'un peuple avec un autre peuple, mais de la lutte de la religion véritable avec le paganisme. Voilà pourquoi elle a pu être l'objet d'une révélation prophétique, comme celle que nous venons d'étudier. C'est par ce triomphe qu'Israël a montré qu'il était réellement sorti de la captivité de Babylone comme un peuple purifié de l'idolâtrie et identifié avec le monothéisme, digne par conséquent, de recevoir le Messie, dont la venue lui avait été assurée au commencement de cette prophétie. Cette lutte a été à la fois militaire et religieuse, et c'est précisément avec ce double caractère qu'elle se présente dans le tableau tracé par Zacharie. Où retrouver quelque chose de pareil dans les temps qui ont précédé soit la destruction du royaume des dix tribus, soit celle du royaume de Juda ?
