20 à 28 Les gardiens des trésors.

Ahija. Nous nous en sommes tenus pour la traduction au texte hébreu. Mais ce nom isolé, sans indication de filiation, étonne ; la construction de la phrase est très dure. Il faut donc bien probablement, avec une légère correction, traduire ce mot par leurs frères : Et les Lévites, leurs frères (frères des Korachites et des Mérarites du verset 19). Voir cette même expression dans 6.44 : Les fils de Mérari, leurs frères, et dans 2Chroniques 29.34.

Notre verset distingue deux espèces de trésors : le trésor proprement dit du temple, produit par les redevances et les dons volontaires (Exode 30.11-16 ; Lévitique 27.1-16 ; Nombres 18.16 ; 2Rois 12.5), et les trésors dont il sera question à partir du verset 26 et qui consistaient en toute espèce d'ex-voto et particulièrement en butin de guerre consacré à l'Eternel.

      8 They with whom precious stones were found gave them to the treasure of the house of Yahweh, under the hand of Jehiel the Gershonite.
