Les derniers mots du verset 20 : l'Eternel avec lui, sont sans doute un vœu : Que l'Eternel soit avec lui, inspiré par le souvenir de l'alliance de paix que Dieu avait faite avec Phinées et ses descendants, d'après Nombres 25.10-13. Le Pentateuque ne parle ni des fonctions des portiers, ni de l'autorité qu'exerçait sur eux Phinées, le fils d'Eléazar.
