D'après le contraste exprimé (verset 1) entre la connaissance et l'amour, on attendrait ici : "Si quelqu'un aime son frère, il connaît comme il faut connaître."

Au lieu de cela, l'apôtre met Dieu comme objet de l'amour, et source de la connaissance. Par là, l'antithèse est plus vraie encore, et elle renferme une profonde pensée : la source de toute connaissance de Dieu en l'homme, c'est qu'il a été d'abord connu de Dieu ; mais, pour Dieu, connaître c'est reconnaître comme lui appartenant, (Jean 10.14,15) c'est aimer ceux qui sont les objets de cette connaissance, c'est créer en eux tout ce qui les rend agréables à ses yeux.

Il ne connaît pas les méchants, car le mal en eux consiste à se détourner de Dieu pour se jeter dans une négation, dans le néant. (Comparer 2Timothée 2.19 ; Matthieu 7.23 ; Psaumes 1.6)

Celui que Dieu connaît, il lui communique, en faisant sa demeure chez lui, quelque chose de son essence divine ; or, Dieu est amour, chaleur et vie aussi bien que lumière. L'amour est donc la marque seule infaillible que j'ai été connu de Dieu et que je connais Dieu. Sans amour, ma connaissance n'est qu'une science stérile et froide, qui bientôt va tarir et rentrer dans le néant.

C'est pourquoi l'apôtre, en disant aimer Dieu, quand, dans son antithèse, on attendait aimer son frère, prend l'amour à sa source, et nous fait ainsi comprendre que celui qui n'aime pas Dieu n'aime pas son frère, (1Jean 4.20) et que tout péché contre l'amour dû à nos frères est un péché contre Dieu.
