Connaître est presque synonyme d'aimer, (verset 5) ou de ces autres termes être en lui (verset 5) demeurer en lui. (verset 6) C'est-à-dire que chacune de ces expressions, entendue dans son sens complet, rend, par un de ses côtés, l'idée de "communion avec Dieu," (1Jean 1.3,6) dont Jean traite dans cette première partie de sa lettre.
Ici, en effet, il veut donner à ses frères les signes auxquels ils reconnaîtront s'ils sont dans cette communion : négativement, ne pas garder ses commandements, (verset 4) de même que "marcher dans les ténèbres," (1Jean 1.6) et prétendre vivre dans cette communion, c'est mentir ; positivement, garder ses commandements (verset 3 ; comparez Jean 14.15,21 ; 15.10), c'est-à-dire toute sa parole, et y conformer sa conduite ; (verset 5) marcher comme il a marché, c'est-à-dire suivre Jésus, l'imiter, lui ressembler en toutes choses et en particulier dans cette communion permanente avec Dieu qui a été le principe de sa vie, (Jean 5.19,30 ; 14.10 ; 17.21) c'est la démonstration seule évidente que nous sommes en communion avec lui, et que l'amour de Dieu, notre amour pour Dieu, est véritablement parfait en nous (verset 5) car cet amour seul se plaît dans la volonté de Dieu, et seul il peut l'accomplir. (Comparer versets 7-11)
- Il est bien évident, du reste, que Jean considère ici la vie chrétienne à son point de vue idéal ; car il ne peut pas se mettre en contradiction avec ce qu'il vient de dire. (1Jean 1.8-10) Mais cet idéal, quiconque le reconnais et y tend de toutes ses forces, avec la grâce de Dieu, celui-là connaît Dieu. (versets 3,4,13)
