World English Bible unlike Cain, who was of the evil one, and killed his brother. Why did he kill him? Because his works were evil, and his brother's righteous.

Grec : Non comme Caïn était issu du malin et tua son frère. Comparer verset 8, 1e note, et Jean 8.44.

La seule mention du crime de Caïn (Genèse 4.1-16) ne suffit pas à l'apôtre pour faire ressortir par contraste l'amour qu'il recommande ; il s'enquiert encore des causes morales de ce crime : pourquoi le tua-t-il ?

Il l'attribue, non à la jalousie, comme le ferait attendre le récit de la Genèse, ni à la haine, comme semblerait l'exiger le contexte, (Genèse 4.13-15) mais à la valeur différente des œuvres de Caïn et d'Abel, qui tenait elle-même à ce que le premier était du malin et accomplissait les œuvres de son père. (Comparer Jean 8.38,41,44)

Par là, l'apôtre remonte à la cause première des mauvais sentiments de Caïn contre son frère ; il rattache aussi son explication aux paroles divines qui furent adressées au meurtrier avant son crime, (Genèse 4.7) et qui indiquaient clairement pourquoi Dieu mit une si grande différence entre le sacrifice des deux frères.

Cette différence une fois manifestée tout le reste suivit naturellement, et Caïn ne put accuser que lui-même de tout ce qui était arrivé, depuis la première cause de son péché jusqu'au châtiment qu'il attira sur lui. Dans ces deux frères se distinguent déjà les deux lignes parallèles de sentiments opposés qui se retrouveront toujours dans le monde : foi et incrédulité ; amour pour Dieu, œuvres qui lui sont agréables, et amour du péché, souvent uni à des œuvres de propre justice ; royaume de Dieu et empire du monde ; enfants de Dieu et enfants du diable.

C'est ainsi que Jean généralise immédiatement (verset 13 et suivants) l'exemple qu'il vient de citer.
