On peut traduire : quand il sera manifesté, (1Jean 2.28) et alors il s'agit de Jésus-Christ, que nous verrons tel qu'il est, ou bien : "quand cela sera manifesté," c'est-à-dire ce que nous serons et alors, Celui que nous verrons tel qu'il est, c'est Dieu, le Père qui nous a aimés comme ses enfants. (verset 1)
Même si, à cause de la proposition qui précède, on traduit : quand cela aura été manifesté les mots : nous le verrons tel qu'il est et nous lui serons semblables, peuvent se rapporter à Christ. La mention du retour de Christ (1Jean 2.28) rend cette explication probable.
Paul (Romains 8.17,29 ; 1Corinthiens 15.49 ; Philippiens 3.21) enseigne de même que nous serons transformés à la ressemblance de Christ. Il faut remarquer du reste que dans maint passage, (1Jean 2.3-6,8,20,28,29) on ne saurait dire si Jean parlé du Père ou du Fils, tellement les deux sont unis dans sa pensée. Ce sera la gloire et la félicité des enfants de Dieu de voir tel qu'il est, face à face, dans la plus intime et la plus parfaite communion, Celui qu'ils ne voient ici-bas que des yeux de la foi, comme dans un miroir, obscurément (Jean 17.24 ; 1Corinthiens 13.12 ; 2Corinthiens 5.7 ; Apocalypse 22.3,4 ; comparez Matthieu 5.8)
Mais à cela l'apôtre ajoute une pensée admirable de vérité et de profondeur : c'est que la contemplation immédiate de Dieu nous rendra semblables à lui. "Semblables à lui, parce que nous le verrons tel qu'il est ;" c'est le principe même de notre transformation, non pas le fait seulement duquel nous pouvons conclure que cette transformation aura lieu.
Par cette contemplation et cette communion, notre être tout entier se pénétrera si bien de la nature divine, que nous serons par degrés transformés à sa ressemblance, (comparez 2Corinthiens 3.18) sans jamais cesser d'être distincts de lui, dans une vivante personnalité.
