World English Bible He who keeps his commandments remains in him, and he in him. By this we know that he remains in us, by the Spirit which he gave us.

Grec : Et celui qui garde ses commandements demeure en Lui et Lui en lui.

Jean ne craint pas de multiplier ces pronoms pour exprimer la communion la plus vivante, la plus intime de l'homme avec Dieu. Pour la première fois dans l'épître, il affirme que Dieu, à son tour, demeure dans l'homme quand l'homme, en gardant ses commandements, demeure en Dieu.

L'homme est avec Dieu dans le même rapport que Jésus-Christ avec son Père. (Jean 10.38 ; 14.10 ; 1Jean 4.16 ; 2.3-6, note.)

A ceci se rapporte, non à ce qui précède, mais à ce qui suit.

Nous connaissons que nous demeurons en lui, à quoi ? à l'Esprit qu'il nous a donné. Et par là, l'apôtre déclare qu'il n'y a de communion avec Dieu qu'en ce même Esprit, par lequel Dieu fait naître de nouveau ses enfants, met en eux le sceau de leur adoption, et répand son amour dans leur cœur. (1Jean 2.20,27 ; Romains 8.14-16 ; 5.5)
