Comparer 2Corinthiens 1.3 ; Ephésiens 1.3. Pierre ouvre son épître par une ardente action de grâce pour le salut qu'il embrasse ici d'un regard, depuis son origine, qui est la miséricorde éternelle de Dieu, notre Père, jusqu'à son parfait accomplissement. (verset 7)

C'est sur ce glorieux salut que l'apôtre fonde toutes les consolations qu'il offre à ses lecteurs, (verset 6) aussi bien que les exhortations qu'il leur adresse à mener une vie sainte. Ce salut, dont Dieu n'a pu trouver la raison souveraine que dans son amour, s'accomplit en nous par l'œuvre à la fois divine et humaine de la régénération, (comparez Jean 3.3-5, notes) source d'une vie nouvelle. Celle-ci a pour premier et principal fruit, une espérance vivante.

L'espérance du chrétien est vivante, d'abord quant à son objet, puisqu'elle est une possession anticipée de la vie éternelle ; (verset 4) elle est vivante surtout en elle-même, parce qu'elle fait partie intégrante de cette vie nouvelle et divine qui commence avec la régénération, et dont la source intarissable est la résurrection de Jésus-Christ d'entre les morts.

La résurrection du Fils de Dieu, sa victoire sur la mort physique et morale, a ouvert pour lui et pour ses rachetés les sources de la vie éternelle. Christ est entré dans la gloire avec notre humanité : là où est le Chef, la tête, là sont déjà tous les membres, (Ephésiens 2.6) non seulement par la certitude de leur espérance vivante, mais parce qu'en réalité Christ est leur vie.

L'épithète de vivant est appliquée à tous les attributs de Christ considéré dans ses rapports avec ses rachetés : il est pour eux "la pierre vivante" (2 : 4), "l'eau vivante," (Jean 4.10 ; Jean 7.38) "le pain vivant," (Jean 6.51) "le chemin vivant." (Hébreux 10.20)

Quelques-uns traduisent "Qui nous a, par la résurrection de Jésus-Christ d'entre les morts, fait renaître à une vivante espérance." Ils pensent que Pierre fait allusion à son expérience personnelle.

Toutes ses espérances messianiques avaient été ruinées par la mort de Jésus, la honte du triple reniement, dont il s'était rendu coupable, achevait de l'accabler. La vue de Jésus-Christ ressuscité, le pardon que lui accorda le Maître qu'il avait trahi, le firent renaître à une espérance, qu'il peut qualifier de vivante, parce qu'il sent qu'elle ne saurait être détruite, comme les espérances plus ou moins charnelles et chimériques qu'il nourrissait auparavant.

Cette explication renferme une part de vérité. Il est possible que Pierre ait pensé à sa propre histoire en écrivant ces lignes, c'est même probable Ainsi s'explique le changement de personne : nous à verset 3, vous à verset 4. Mais en traduisant : "nous a fait renaître à l'espérance," on affaiblit le sens du mot grec et l'on ne saisit pas la pensée de l'apôtre dans sa profondeur.

Le même terme se retrouve à verset 23, où, employé sans régime, il exprime l'idée, complète en elle-même, de la régénération. Dans notre passage déjà, Pierre a cette régénération en vue. La résurrection de Jésus-Christ n'a pas eu seulement pour effet de ranimer son espérance ; elle a régénéré, créé à nouveau tout son être spirituel, et est devenue ainsi le fondement d'une espérance qui est à la fois impérissable et vivifiante.
