- A, majuscules, texte reçu, portent : "sans l'avoir connu," c'est-à-dire connu personnellement, selon la chair, car spirituellement ils le connaissaient bien. Le sens des deux leçons est au fond le même.

L'apôtre revient à la joie que produit l'espérance du salut, (verset 6) pour la rattacher directement à la personne de Christ qui en est la source. Il montre comment cette joie ineffable et glorieuse (qu'on ne peut exprimer en paroles et qui participe déjà par sa nature de la gloire du ciel, car le grec porte : joie ineffable et glorifiée), peut exister dès maintenant, quand même sa pleine manifestation n'aura lieu qu'au retour du Seigneur : elle est produite par deux sentiments qui unissent indissolublement l'âme fidèle au Sauveur, l'amour et la foi.

Il indique par une double antithèse que ces deux affections du cœur ont le pouvoir de s'attacher à un objet invisible : Vous ne l'avez pas vu et vous l'aimer ; vous ne le voyez pas encore, mais vous croyez, et c'est assez pour tressaillir d'une joie ineffable et glorieuse.
