L'apôtre oppose le Dieu vivant et véritable aux idoles mortes et fausses, (Actes 14.15) et indique le but de la conversion à Dieu par ce double caractère : servir Dieu et attendre Christ des cieux. C'est là toute la vie chrétienne. (Comparer Philippiens 3.20)

Mais afin que cette attente de Christ soit pour le fidèle un objet de consolation et de joie, et non d'effroi, Paul rappelle que Dieu l'a ressuscité des morts, ce qui est le triomphe de son œuvre de rédemption, et que, par là même, il nous délivre de la colère à venir, c'est-à-dire des châtiments réservés au pécheur impénitent. (Comparer sur ce mot Jean 3.36, note.)

Paul savait que cette attente était très vive chez les chrétiens de Thessalonique, et lui-même l'encourage ; (1Thessaloniciens 4.13-18) mais en même temps il les prémunit contre les écarts auxquels aurait pu donner lieu l'ardent désir de cette délivrance finale, ou plutôt les fausses idées que s'en faisaient quelques membres de l'Église (1Thessaloniciens 5.1 ; 2Thessaloniciens 2.1)
