1 Thessaloniciens 2.8

Even so, affectionately longing for you, we were well pleased to impart to you, not the Good News of God only, but also our own souls, because you had become very dear to us.
οὕτως ὁμειρόμενοι ὑμῶν εὐδοκοῦμεν μεταδοῦναι ὑμῖν οὐ μόνον τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τοῦ θεοῦ ἀλλὰ καὶ τὰς ἑαυτῶν ψυχάς, διότι ἀγαπητοὶ ἡμῖν ἐγενήθητε.

"La mère qui nourrit ses enfants montre un rare et merveilleux amour, car elle ne s'épargne ni travaux ni peines ; elle ne se refuse à aucune sollicitude ; aucune assiduité ne la fatigue ; elle livre avec joie son propre sang à son nourrisson. C'est de telles affections que l'apôtre fut rempli envers ses frères de Thessalonique, et il déclare qu'il eût été prêt à donner sa propre vie pour leur bien, parce qu'ils étaient devenus ses bien-aimés (ainsi porte le grec). Il faut se le rappeler sans cesse : quiconque veut être mis au nombre des vrais pasteurs doit aimer les âmes comme Paul les aimait, de sorte que le salut de l'Église lui soit plus précieux que sa propre vie" Calvin.
