Grec : "Son propre vase," qui renferme l'âme, qui est l'organe de l'âme, raison de le conserver pur. (Comparer 2Corinthiens 4.7) D'autres interprètes veulent voir dans ce vase la femme mariée (1Pierre 3.7) avec laquelle chaque mari doit vivre dans la sainteté et l'honneur, en ne cédant pas à "l'impudicité" (verset 3) et à la "passion de convoitise." (verset 5)

Ce sens n'est pas impossible, le premier est plus probable. La plupart des commentateurs l'adoptent.

Le verbe employé par l'apôtre signifie proprement non pas "posséder," mais, "gagner, acquérir." (Luc 21.19, note.)
