La miséricorde qui a été faite à l'apôtre, avait pour but de l'établir comme un exemple qui pût servir éternellement à la consolation et à l'encouragement des pécheurs les plus disposés à désespérer.

En s'exprimant ainsi, l'apôtre montre encore une profonde humilité, puisqu'il donne à entendre que le but de cette divine miséricorde n'était pas son salut, à lui, mais le salut des autres.

Et en même temps qu'aurait-il pu dire de plus persuasif, de plus émouvant pour prouver les richesses de la grâce de Dieu, manifestées dans l'Evangile ?

"Un exemple nous fera mieux sentir ce qu'il a voulu exprimer. Représentez-vous une cité populeuse dont tous les habitants se sont rendus criminels envers leur prince, les uns plus, les autres moins. Parmi eux, il en est un qui est, plus que tous, coupable et digne de condamnation. On annonce à tous que le roi fait grâce ; nul ne le croit entièrement jusqu'à ce qu'ils voient que celui-là aussi a obtenu son pardon, qui est le plus criminel de tous ; mais après ce fait, il n'y a plus de doute. Ainsi, dit Paul, Dieu, voulant prouver à tous les hommes qu'il fait grâce, choisit le plus coupable de tous, exerce envers lui sa pleine miséricorde : qui pourra douter désormais ?" Chrysostome.
