Ou de l'avertissement, de l'exhortation, de la prédication. (Comparer 1Timothée 1.18 ; 4.11 ; 5.7 ; 6.13)

L'apôtre reprend la pensée de 1Timothée 1.3, où se trouve le même mot, pour indiquer ce que Timothée devait faire à Ephèse.

La charité, qui est l'accomplissement de la loi, (Romains 13.10) est le but suprême de la rédemption, par conséquent aussi de toute proclamation de la vérité. Cet amour de Dieu et des hommes n'est compatible qu'avec un cœur pur de tout mauvais motif, de tout égoïsme, et avec une conscience qui a la paix de Dieu.

L'homme ne peut aimer qu'un Dieu réconcilié, qui a pardonné ; et tout péché nouveau, dont on n'aurait pas obtenu le pardon, trouble la bonne conscience. Mais la principale source de cet amour, c'est la foi, une foi sincère (Grec : "sans hypocrisie") qui ne se contente pas des apparences sans la réalité. C'est cette foi qui produit aussi la bonne conscience. (Voy. 1Timothée 1.19 ; 3.9 ; 2Timothée 1.3 ; 2)

Tout ce qui peut minimiser notre amour envers Dieu ou pour nos frères, tend à rendre vaine Ses ordonnances. Le but de l'Évangile est atteint quand les pécheurs, par leur repentance envers Dieu et leur foi en Jésus-Christ, commencent à pratiquer l'amour envers leurs frères et sœurs. Comme les croyants de l’époque suivaient les voies préconisées par les ordonnance divines, la loi n'était pas contre eux.

À moins que nous ne soyons rendus vertueux par la foi en Christ, par une repentance réelle et l'abandon du péché, nous restons sous la malédiction de la loi, même au temps de l'Évangile, et nous sommes incapables de participer à toute félicité céleste.
