Ce titre pompeux de docteur de la loi était sans doute celui que s'attribuaient les faux docteurs ; ce qui montre qu'ils étaient des chrétiens judaïsants.

Plusieurs autres passages de nos épîtres confirment cette opinion. Et cependant ils n'entendaient ni la loi, ni les question (1Timothée 1.4,6) sur lesquelles ils parlaient avec tant d'assurance, et dont ils prétendaient trouver la solution dans l'Ancien Testament. S'ils avaient mieux compris la loi, ils auraient aussi mieux compris l'Evangile. (1Timothée 1.8)
