Pour comprendre que l'apôtre ne dédaigne pas de mentionner des vices grossiers, comme l'ivrognerie, la violence (Grec : "prompt à frapper"), il faut se souvenir que les chrétiens d'alors étaient entourés de toutes les immoralités du paganisme, et qu'ils y avaient vécu eux-mêmes jusqu'à leur conversion, en sorte que les mœurs parmi eux ne pouvaient s'élever tout d'un coup à une hauteur qui aurait rendu superflues de telles recommandations.

- Le texte reçu ajoute ces mots : "ni porté au gain déshonnête" (comparez 1Timothée 3.8 et 1.7) qui ne sont pas authentiques. Mais l'idée se retrouve dans notre verset même.

Ces dernières qualifications indiquent précisément le contraire des vices condamnés dans les paroles qui précèdent, et se trouvent recommandées à tous les chrétiens dans 3.2. (Comparer 2Timothée 2.24)
