ἕως ἔρχομαι πρόσεχε τῇ ἀναγνώσει, τῇ παρακλήσει, τῇ διδασκαλίᾳ.

1Timothée 3.14,15, note.

Les trois termes de cette recommandation s'appliquent aux fonctions publiques de Timothée ; ainsi, par la lecture Paul entend évidemment la lecture des saintes Ecritures dans les assemblées, comme source et fondement de l'exhortation et de l'enseignement. (Comparer Actes 13.15 ; 2Corinthiens 3.14, où se retrouve le même terme.)

On voit par le livre des Actes aussi bien que par les épîtres, que les apôtres eux-mêmes fondaient leur prédication sur l'Ancien Testament, auquel ils en appellent sans cesse.
