Grec : "Se sont percés eux-mêmes de beaucoup de tourments."

Il faut entendre par là les soucis, les inquiétudes, les ennuis qui les tourmentent jour et nuit pour des biens dont ils n'ont aucune vraie jouissance.

"A quoi il faut ajouter le tourment des remords, à cause des péchés dans lesquels l'avarice entraîne l'homme, ce dont Judas (Matthieu 27.3) nous donne un éclatant exemple." Luther.

"Ce n'est pas la possession, mais la cupidité des biens de la terre que saint Paul condamne. L'un peut être pauvre d'esprit au milieu des richesses ; l'autre peut être riche par cupidité dans l'indigence. Le premier se sanctifie en les possédant ; le second peut se damner en les désirant." Quesnel.

- L'amour de l'argent (ce mot ne se trouve qu'ici) auquel Paul attribue de si terribles effets (1Timothée 6.9) est, selon la version d'Ostervald, "la racine de toutes sortes de maux," ce qui est une paraphrase ; selon la version de Lausanne : "la racine de tous les maux," exagération évidente ; selon le texte : "une racine de tous les maux," ce qui est parfaitement vrai.

- Il y a littéralement : "lequel (amour de l'argent) quelques-uns ayant désiré avec ardeur." Expression impropre, car c'est l'argent et non l'amour de l'argent qui est l'objet de ce désir.
