In the seventh year Jehoiada strengthened himself, and took the captains of hundreds, Azariah the son of Jeroham, and Ishmael the son of Jehohanan, and Azariah the son of Obed, and Maaseiah the son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat the son of Zichri, into covenant with him.

They went about in Judah, and gathered the Levites out of all the cities of Judah, and the heads of fathers' households of Israel, and they came to Jerusalem.
3
All the assembly made a covenant with the king in God's house. He said to them, "Behold, the king's son shall reign, as Yahweh has spoken concerning the sons of David.
4
This is the thing that you shall do. A third part of you, who come in on the Sabbath, of the priests and of the Levites, shall be porters of the thresholds.
5
A third part shall be at the king's house; and a third part at the gate of the foundation. All the people shall be in the courts of Yahweh's house.
6
But let no one come into the house of Yahweh, except the priests, and those who minister of the Levites. They shall come in, for they are holy, but all the people shall follow Yahweh's instructions.
7
The Levites shall surround the king, every man with his weapons in his hand. Whoever comes into the house, let him be slain. Be with the king when he comes in, and when he goes out."
8
So the Levites and all Judah did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded: and they took every man his men, those who were to come in on the Sabbath; with those who were to go out on the Sabbath; for Jehoiada the priest didn't dismiss the shift.

Jehoiada the priest delivered to the captains of hundreds the spears, and bucklers, and shields, that had been king David's, which were in God's house.
10
He set all the people, every man with his weapon in his hand, from the right side of the house to the left side of the house, along by the altar and the house, around the king.
11
Then they brought out the king's son, and put the crown on him, and gave him the testimony, and made him king: and Jehoiada and his sons anointed him; and they said, "Long live the king!"
12
When Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and praising the king, she came to the people into the house of Yahweh:
13
and she looked, and, behold, the king stood by his pillar at the entrance, and the captains and the trumpets by the king; and all the people of the land rejoiced, and blew trumpets; the singers also played musical instruments, and led the singing of praise. Then Athaliah tore her clothes, and said, "Treason! treason!"

Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds who were set over the army, and said to them, "Bring her out between the ranks; and whoever follows her, let him be slain with the sword." For the priest said, "Don't kill her in the Yahweh's house."
15
So they made way for her. She went to the entrance of the horse gate to the king's house; and they killed her there.
16
Jehoiada made a covenant between himself, and all the people, and the king, that they should be Yahweh's people.
17
All the people went to the house of Baal, and broke it down, and broke his altars and his images in pieces, and killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars.
18
Jehoiada appointed the officers of the house of Yahweh under the hand of the priests the Levites, whom David had distributed in the house of Yahweh, to offer the burnt offerings of Yahweh, as it is written in the law of Moses, with rejoicing and with singing, according to the order of David.
19
He set the porters at the gates of the house of Yahweh, that no one who was unclean in anything should enter in.
20
He took the captains of hundreds, and the nobles, and the governors of the people, and all the people of the land, and brought down the king from the house of Yahweh: and they came through the upper gate to the king's house, and set the king on the throne of the kingdom.
21
So all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet. Athaliah they had slain with the sword.

Mais en la septième année Jéhojadah se fortifia, et prit avec soi des centeniers ; [savoir] Hazaria fils de Jéroham, Ismahël fils de Jéhohanan, Hazaria fils de Hobed, Mahaséja fils de Hadaja, Elisaphat fils de Zicri, et traita alliance avec eux.

Et ils firent le tour de Juda, et assemblèrent de toutes les villes de Juda les Lévites, et les Chefs des pères d'Israël, et vinrent à Jérusalem.

Et toute cette assemblée traita alliance avec le Roi dans la maison de Dieu, et [Jéhojadah] leur dit : Voici, le fils du Roi régnera selon que l'Eternel en a parlé touchant les fils de David.

C'est ici [donc] ce que vous ferez : La troisième partie de ceux d'entre vous qui entrerez en semaine, tant des Sacrificateurs, que des Lévites, sera à la porte de Sippim.
5
Et la troisième partie se tiendra vers la maison du Roi ; et la troisième partie à la porte du fondement ; et que tout le peuple soit dans les parvis de la maison de l'Eternel.
6
Que nul n'entre dans la maison de l'Eternel, que les Sacrificateurs et les Lévites servants ; ceux-ci y entreront, parce qu'ils sont sanctifiés ; et le reste du peuple fera la garde de l'Eternel.
7
Et ces Lévites-là environneront le Roi tout autour, ayant chacun ses armes en sa main ; mais que celui qui entrera dans la maison, soit mis à mort ; et tenez-vous auprès du Roi quand il sortira et quand il entrera.

Les Lévites donc et tous ceux de Juda firent tout ce que Jéhojadah le Sacrificateur avait commandé, et prirent chacun ses gens, tant ceux qui entraient en semaine que ceux qui sortaient de semaine ; car Jéhojadah le Sacrificateur n'avait point donné congé aux départements.

Et Jéhojadah le sacrificateur donna aux centeniers des hallebardes, des boucliers, et des rondelles, qui avaient été au Roi David, et qui étaient dans la maison de Dieu.
10
Et il rangea tout le peuple, tout autour du Roi ; chacun tenant ses armes en sa main, depuis le côté droit du Temple jusqu'au côté gauche du Temple, tant pour l'autel, que pour le Temple.

Alors on amena le fils du Roi, et on mit sur lui la couronne et le témoignage, et ils l'établirent Roi ; et Jéhojadah et ses fils l'oignirent, et dirent : Vive le Roi !
12
Et Hathalie entendant le bruit du peuple qui courait, et qui chantait les louanges [de Dieu] autour du Roi, vint vers le peuple en la maison de l'Eternel.
13
Et elle regarda, et voilà, le Roi était près de sa colonne à l'entrée, et les capitaines, et les trompettes étaient près du Roi, et tout le peuple du pays était en joie, et on sonnait des trompettes ; les chantres aussi [chantaient] avec des instruments de musique, et montraient comment il fallait chanter les louanges [de Dieu] ; et sur cela Hathalie déchira ses vêtements, et dit : Conjuration ! conjuration !

Alors le Sacrificateur Jéhojadah fit sortir les centeniers, qui avaient la charge de l'armée, et leur dit : Menez-la hors des rangs ; et que celui qui la suivra, soit mis à mort par l'épée ; car le Sacrificateur avait dit : Ne la mettez point à mort dans la maison de l'Eternel.

Ils lui firent donc place ; et elle s'en retourna en la maison du Roi par l'entrée de la porte des chevaux, et ils la firent mourir là.
16
Et Jéhojadah, tout le peuple, et le Roi traitèrent cette alliance, qu'ils seraient le peuple de l'Eternel.
17
Alors tout le peuple entra dans la maison de Bahal, et ils la démolirent ; ils brisèrent ses autels et ses images, et tuèrent Mattan Sacrificateur de Bahal, devant les autels.

Jéhojadah rétablit aussi les charges de la maison de l'Eternel, entre les mains des Sacrificateurs Lévites, que David avait distribués pour la maison de l'Eternel, afin qu'ils offrissent les holocaustes à l'Eternel, ainsi qu'il est écrit dans la Loi de Moïse, avec joie et avec des cantiques, selon la disposition qui en avait été faite par David.

Il établit aussi des portiers aux portes de la maison de l'Eternel ; afin qu'aucune personne souillée, pour quelque chose que ce fût, n'y entrât.
20
Il prit [ensuite] les centeniers, les hommes les plus considérables, ceux qui étaient établis en autorité sur le peuple, et tout le peuple du pays ; et il fit descendre le Roi de la maison de l'Eternel, et ils entrèrent par le milieu de la haute porte dans la maison du Roi ; puis ils firent asseoir le Roi sur le trône Royal.

Et tout le peuple du pays fut en joie, et la ville demeura tranquille, bien qu'on eût mis à mort Hathalie par l'épée.

1 à 11 correspond à 2Rois 11.4-12, mais avec bien des différences dont la principale est que dans le texte des Rois la révolution semble s'être faite sans la participation des Lévites et des sacrificateurs, tandis que le texte des Chroniques fait jouer à ceux-ci un rôle prépondérant, à l'exclusion presque complète de la garde et des coureurs dont parle 2 Rois. Dans les deux morceaux suivants (versets 12 à 15 et 16 à 21, comparez 2Rois 11.13-20) les divergences entre les deux textes sont moins grandes.
Joas est couronné roi ; Athalie est mise à mort.
- Si l'on se considère comme faisant partie du « peuple de l'Éternel », nous devons accomplir notre devoir avec le plus grand sérieux, que ce soit à l'égard de Dieu, ou envers les hommes.Il en était ainsi lors de cette révolution heureuse, mentionnée dans ce chapitre : le peuple se réjouit d'une telle situation. Quand ce descendant de David fut couronné, la paix et la joie furent retrouvées. Voir 2Rois 11:1-21.
