11 à 17 racontent des faits que 2 Rois omet.

La captivité momentanée de Manassé à Babylone (ou en tous cas son assujettissement au roi d'Assyrie) est confirmée par les documents assyriens. On trouve déjà sous Asarhaddon le nom de Manassé de Juda dans une liste de 22 rois tributaires de l'Assyrie (comparez la note à la fin du chapitre 21 de 2 Rois). Puis Assurbanipal, le successeur d'Asarhaddon, après avoir raconté le châtiment sévère qu'il infligea à plusieurs princes, alliés de son frère révolté, Sammughès, vice-roi de Babylone, parmi lesquels se trouvait l'Egyptien Néco, qui fut conduit enchaîné dans le pays du grand roi, nomme Juda au nombre des pays soumis à l'Assyrie. Or cette campagne eut lieu du temps de Manassé, et celui-ci peut fort bien avoir été fait prisonnier et emmené lié, comme Néco. Quant au lieu où fut déporté Manassé, si notre auteur parle de Babylone et non de Ninive, cela s'explique par le fait que Babylone appartenait alors à l'Assyrie. Nous savons que c'est à Babylone qu'Assurbanipal reçut, par exemple, des ambassadeurs cypriotes (Schrader, Keilinschriften, page 367). Assurbanipal séjourna très probablement quelque temps à Babylone après avoir châtié les rebelles. Le Chroniste relève avec intention cette circonstance exceptionnelle, dans laquelle sans doute il a vu l'accomplissement d'Esaïe 39.6.
