2 Corinthiens 11.2

Car je suis jaloux de vous d'une jalousie de Dieu, parce que je vous ai fiancés à un seul époux, pour vous présenter à Christ comme une vierge pure.
Je vous aime d’un amour jaloux, et ce très grand amour vient de Dieu. En effet, je vous ai promis en mariage à un seul mari : le Christ. Oui, je vous présente à lui comme une jeune fille très pure.

C'est donc par une sainte jalousie que Paul fait ce qui, en d'autres circonstances, eût été une folie. Jéhovah est souvent représenté dans l'Ancien Testament comme l'Epoux de son peuple et jaloux de lui, voulant qu'il lui reste fidèle comme une épouse. (Esaïe 54.5 ; 62.5,Jérémie 3.1 et suivants ; Ezéchiel 16.8 et suivants ; Osée 2.19-20)

L'apôtre partage cette jalousie de Dieu pour l'Eglise de Corinthe, qu'il a fiancée à Christ, l'Epoux de l'Eglise, par la prédication de l'Evangile. Il voudrait pouvoir la lui présenter, au grand jour de sa venue, pure, fidèle. Mais à cet égard, il a des craintes fondées ; (verset 3) de là sa jalousie, de là aussi l'imprudence qu'il met à relever son ministère, par opposition à celui des faux docteurs qui mettaient l'Eglise en danger.

C'est au point de vue de ce motif élevé et saint qu'il faut apprécier ce chapitre et le suivant, où Paul ne craint pas de se montrer si véhément et si personnel.
