Or, j’ai bien peur que vous ne suiviez l’exemple d’Ève qui s’est laissé séduire par les ruses du serpent, c’est-à-dire que vous ne laissiez vos esprits se corrompre et vos pensées se détourner de la simple fidélité due au Christ. Je crains que vous ne perdiez la sincère ferveur avec laquelle vous lui étiez attachés.

Si même nos premiers parents, qui étaient, eux aussi, à l'égard de Dieu, dans ce rapport innocent et fidèle de l'épouse envers son époux, purent être séduits et entraînés dans la ruine, combien plus les chrétiens, l'Eglise dans laquelle, malgré le renouvellement du Saint-Esprit, le péché habite encore !

La simplicité à l'égard de Christ, c'est-à-dire cette foi simple, cette confiance en lui comme l'unique Maître, l'unique Sauveur, ce cœur non partagé, voilà la sauvegarde du chrétien. L'amour des nouveautés, de ce qui est extraordinaire, de ce qui flatte une sagesse charnelle est toujours l'avant-coureur de la ruine.

- On voit par ces mots que Paul admet avec toute sa réalité historique le fait de la tentation et de la chute, (Genèse 3) dans laquelle le serpent fut l'instrument du démon. (verset 14 ; comparez Apocalypse 12.9 ; 20.2)
