1 It is doubtless not profitable for me to boast. For I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.2 I know a man in Christ, fourteen years ago (whether in the body, I don't know, or whether out of the body, I don't know; God knows), such a one caught up into the third heaven.3 I know such a man (whether in the body, or outside of the body, I don't know; God knows),4 how he was caught up into Paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.5 On behalf of such a one I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except in my weaknesses.6 For if I would desire to boast, I will not be foolish; for I will speak the truth. But I refrain, so that no man may think more of me than that which he sees in me, or hears from me.7 By reason of the exceeding greatness of the revelations, that I should not be exalted excessively, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, that I should not be exalted excessively.8 Concerning this thing, I begged the Lord three times that it might depart from me.9 He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.10 Therefore I take pleasure in weaknesses, in injuries, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake. 11 I have become foolish in boasting. You compelled me, for I ought to have been commended by you, for in nothing was I inferior to the very best apostles, though I am nothing.12 Truly the signs of an apostle were worked among you in all patience, in signs and wonders and mighty works.13 For what is there in which you were made inferior to the rest of the assemblies, unless it is that I myself was not a burden to you? Forgive me this wrong.14 Behold, this is the third time I am ready to come to you, and I will not be a burden to you; for I seek not your possessions, but you. For the children ought not to save up for the parents, but the parents for the children.15 I will most gladly spend and be spent for your souls. If I love you more abundantly, am I loved the less?16 But be it so, I did not myself burden you. But, being crafty, I caught you with deception.17 Did I take advantage of you by anyone of them whom I have sent to you?18 I exhorted Titus, and I sent the brother with him. Did Titus take any advantage of you? Didn't we walk in the same spirit? Didn't we walk in the same steps?19 Again, do you think that we are excusing ourselves to you? In the sight of God we speak in Christ. But all things, beloved, are for your edifying.20 For I am afraid that by any means, when I come, I might find you not the way I want to, and that I might be found by you as you don't desire; that by any means there would be strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, factions, slander, whisperings, proud thoughts, riots;21 that again when I come my God would humble me before you, and I would mourn for many of those who have sinned before now, and not repented of the uncleanness and sexual immorality and lustfulness which they committed. -

1 Il faut se glorifier... Cela n’est pas bon. J’en viendrai néanmoins à des visions et à des révélations du Seigneur.2 Je connais un homme en Christ qui, voici quatorze ans – était-ce dans son corps ? je ne sais ; était-ce hors de son corps ? je ne sais, Dieu le sait – fut ravi jusqu’au troisième ciel.3 Et je sais que cet homme – était-ce dans son corps ou sans son corps ? je ne sais, Dieu le sait –4 fut enlevé dans le paradis et qu’il entendit des paroles ineffables qu’il n’est pas permis à un homme d’exprimer.5 Je me glorifierai d’un tel homme, mais de moi-même je ne me glorifierai pas, sinon de mes faiblesses.6 Si je voulais me glorifier, je ne serais pas un insensé, car je dirais la vérité ; mais je m’en abstiens, de peur que quelqu’un ne m’estime au-dessus de ce qu’il voit ou entend de moi,7 à cause de l’excellence de ces révélations. Et pour que je ne sois pas enflé d’orgueil, il m’a été mis une écharde dans la chair, un ange de Satan pour me souffleter, pour que je ne sois pas enflé d’orgueil.8 Trois fois j’ai supplié le Seigneur de l’éloigner de moi,9 et il m’a dit : Ma grâce te suffit, car ma puissance s’accomplit dans la faiblesse. Je me glorifierai donc bien plus volontiers de mes faiblesses, afin que la puissance de Christ repose sur moi.10 C’est pourquoi je me plais dans les faiblesses, dans les outrages, dans les privations, dans les persécutions, dans les angoisses, pour Christ ; en effet quand je suis faible, c’est alors que je suis fort.L'inquiétude que Paul ressent au sujet des Corinthiens
11 J’ai été un insensé : vous m’y avez contraint. En effet, c’est par vous que j’aurais dû être recommandé. Car je n’ai été nullement inférieur aux apôtres prétendus supérieurs, bien que je ne sois rien.12 Les signes distinctifs de l’apôtre ont été vus à l’œuvre au milieu de vous par une patience à toute épreuve, par des signes, des prodiges et des miracles.13 Qu’avez-vous eu de moins que les autres Églises, sinon que je ne vous ai point été à charge ? Pardonnez-moi cette injustice-là !14 Voici, je suis prêt à aller chez vous pour la troisième fois et je ne vous serai pas à charge ; car je ne cherche pas ce qui est à vous, mais vous-mêmes. Ce n’est pas, en effet, aux enfants à amasser pour leurs parents, mais aux parents pour leurs enfants.15 Pour moi, je ferai très volontiers des dépenses, et je me dépenserai moi-même pour vos âmes. En vous aimant davantage, serai-je moins aimé de vous ?16 Soit ! je n’ai pas été un fardeau pour vous ; mais, en homme fourbe, je vous aurais pris par ruse !17 Vous ai-je exploité par quelqu’un de ceux que je vous ai envoyés ?18 J’ai exhorté Tite (à aller chez vous), et avec lui j’ai envoyé le frère : est-ce que Tite vous a exploités ? N’avons-nous pas marché dans le même esprit, sur les mêmes traces ?19 Vous vous imaginez depuis longtemps que nous nous défendons auprès de vous. C’est devant Dieu, en Christ, que nous parlons, et tout cela, bien-aimés, pour votre édification.20 Car je crains de ne pas vous trouver, à mon arrivée, tels que je voudrais, et d’être moi-même trouvé par vous tel que vous ne voudriez pas. (Je crains) qu’il n’y ait de la discorde, de la jalousie, des animosités, des rivalités, des médisances, des racontars, de l’orgueil, des désordres.21 (Je crains) qu’à mon arrivée, mon Dieu ne m’humilie de nouveau à votre sujet, et que je n’aie à pleurer sur plusieurs de ceux qui ont péché précédemment et ne se sont pas repentis de l’impureté, de l’inconduite et du dérèglement qu’ils ont pratiqués. -

"Si quelqu'un objecte qu'ici Paul parle, non de son manque de force, mais de ses diverses afflictions, je réponds que toutes ces souffrances sont des exercices par lesquels Dieu nous manifeste notre faiblesse. Car si le Seigneur n'avait pas exercé son serviteur par tant d'épreuves, jamais ce dernier n'aurait eu un sentiment si vif de son infirmité. Ainsi, il n'a point seulement égard à ses souffrances, mais aussi aux effets qu'elles produisent : la connaissance de notre faiblesse, la défiance de nous-mêmes, l'humilité." Calvin.
Le dernier mot de ce verset, cet admirable paradoxe n'est autre que la parole du Seigneur, (verset 9) confirmée par l'expérience même de son serviteur.
