When they had arrived, and had gathered the assembly together, they reported all the things that God had done with them, and that he had opened a door of faith to the nations.

Passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas.

After the uproar had ceased, Paul sent for the disciples, took leave of them, and departed to go into Macedonia.

When he had gone through those parts, and had encouraged them with many words, he came into Greece.

When he had spent three months there, and a plot was made against him by Jews as he was about to set sail for Syria, he determined to return through Macedonia.

These accompanied him as far as Asia: Sopater of Beroea; Aristarchus and Secundus of the Thessalonians; Gaius of Derbe; Timothy; and Tychicus and Trophimus of Asia.

But these had gone ahead, and were waiting for us at Troas.

We sailed away from Philippi after the days of Unleavened Bread, and came to them at Troas in five days, where we stayed seven days.

There were many lights in the upper room where we were gathered together.

Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, set apart for the Good News of God,

for a great and effective door has opened to me, and there are many adversaries.

Now when I came to Troas for the Good News of Christ, and when a door was opened to me in the Lord,

praying together for us also, that God may open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds;

"To the angel of the assembly in Philadelphia write: "He who is holy, he who is true, he who has the key of David, he who opens and no one can shut, and who shuts and no one opens, says these things:

"I know your works (behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one can shut), that you have a little power, and kept my word, and didn't deny my name.
À l’époque de l’apôtre, lors des triomphes et des réjouissances, l'abondance de parfums et d'odeurs doucereuses était courante ; de même, le Nom et le salut offert par Jésus, tels un onguent répandu, répandaient une odeur spirituelle agréable en tout lieu. Pour certains, l'Évangile a une saveur de mort et il conduit au trépas. Ils Le rejettent, pour leur ruine. Pour d'autres, ce même Évangile a comme but, la vie : alors qu’Il touchait leur cœur au début, quand ils étaient « morts » dans leurs péchés, Il les sollicite désormais, en tant que « vivants », pour les conduire vers la vie éternelle.
Notez le triste impact du dernier verset de ce texte, dans le cœur de l'apôtre : nous devrions avoir la même réaction. Le ministère chrétien est important, nous ne disposons d’aucune force personnelle pour l’accomplir ; toutes nos capacités proviennent de Dieu. Tout ce que nous faisons de notre propre chef, à moins que cela ne soit fait en toute sincérité, sous le regard du Seigneur, ne vient pas de Lui, et n’à aucune portée.
Puissions-nous veiller attentivement sur nous-mêmes, quant à ce genre d’activité. « Écoutons » le témoignage de notre conscience, sous l'enseignement de l'Esprit Saint, qui sincèrement, est le Seul qui puisse pleinement nous révéler Christ !
