La liaison de ce verset avec le précédent par la particule car peut être envisagée comme indiquant la raison d'une réponse tacite à la question sérieuse du verset 16 "Nul n'est suffisant que ceux qui prêchent la Parole comme nous, car..." C'est ainsi qu'on l'entend d'ordinaire.

Mais ne serait-ce pas plutôt une réflexion inspirée par la vue de ces plusieurs qui falsifient la Parole pour plaire aux hommes, et pensent ainsi se rendre suffisants ? "Ils s'imaginent l'être ; non pas nous, car..."

Falsifier est exprimé dans l'original par un mot emprunté au mélange frauduleux des liqueurs ; ainsi on dit : "frelater du vin." Par opposition à ce crime des faux apôtres, et pour que la Parole de Dieu reste pure, tout en passant par l'homme, Paul expose la manière dont ils doivent l'annoncer (Voir, sur le sens du mot que nous traduisons par sincérité, 2Corinthiens 1.12, note.)

Les trois expressions qui suivent ne sont point une répétition inutile ; Paul parle de par Dieu, source de toute vérité, de toute vie, comme si Dieu parlait par lui ; en la présence de Dieu, sous son regard, l'ayant pour témoin, devant lui rendre compte ; en Christ, en qui seul Dieu est le vrai Dieu, hors de qui nous ne pouvons rien produire, qui est le centre, l'objet de toute prédication évangélique.
