The law came in besides, that the trespass might abound; but where sin abounded, grace abounded more exceedingly;

By so much, Jesus has become the collateral of a better covenant.

Many, indeed, have been made priests, because they are hindered from continuing by death.

But he, because he lives forever, has his priesthood unchangeable.

Therefore he is also able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, seeing that he lives forever to make intercession for them.

In that he says, "A new covenant," he has made the first old. But that which is becoming old and grows aged is near to vanishing away.

See that you don't refuse him who speaks. For if they didn't escape when they refused him who warned on the earth, how much more will we not escape who turn away from him who warns from heaven,

whose voice shook the earth then, but now he has promised, saying, "Yet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the heavens."

This phrase, "Yet once more," signifies the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that have been made, that those things which are not shaken may remain.

Therefore, receiving a Kingdom that can't be shaken, let us have grace, through which we serve God acceptably, with reverence and awe,

for our God is a consuming fire.
1° (verset 10) ce qu'il y avait de glorieux dans le ministère de la loi n'a pas été glorifié, cette gloire a disparu à cet égard (Grec : "en cette partie"), en ce qui lui était propre. Pourquoi ? A cause de la gloire qui le surpasse (trad. littérale), c'est-à-dire celle du ministère de la justice. C'est ainsi qu'on dirait : l'éclat de la lune disparaît devant l'éclat du soleil.
2° Enfin, le dernier point de comparaison est relatif au temps, à la durée : d'une part, la gloire de ce qui passe et périt ; d'autre part, la gloire de ce qui est permanent, pour tous les âges et pour l'éternité.
- Paul, en glorifiant ainsi le ministère de l'Evangile, en réduisant à sa juste valeur celui de Moïse, avait sans aucun doute une intention polémique contre les docteurs judaïsants qui lui étaient opposés à Corinthe et ailleurs.
Mais ce passage renferme pour tous les temps une vue juste et profonde sur le vrai caractère respectif des deux alliances. Et ce sujet reste pour nous de la plus haute importance.
