2 Corinthiens 5.14

For the love of Christ constrains us; because we judge thus, that one died for all, therefore all died.

La charité, l'amour de Christ, c'est, non pas notre amour pour lui, mais son amour pour nous ; (ainsi Romains 5.5 ; 8.39) cet amour dont il nous a aimés le premier, qu'il répand dans nos cœurs par son Saint-Esprit, et qui nous unit étroitement à nos frères, nous donnant la force d'accomplir tous les sacrifices pour eux. C'est là la vraie explication et la preuve (car) du verset précèdent.

Cet amour nous presse (Grec : "nous tient liés, nous domine"), dit l'apôtre, surtout par la plus émouvante manifestation que Christ nous en a donnée : il est mort pour tous ; donc tous sont morts.

Dans un sens, on pourrait trouver cette conclusion en contradiction avec la doctrine scripturaire que, puisque Christ a souffert la mort pour nous, nous ne devons plus y être assujettis. La réponse à cette objection se trouve complète dans Romains 6.1-11 ; 7.1-6, notes.

Précisément par sa mort pour nous, Christ a rendu possible que nous ne mourions pas dans une condamnation éternelle, mais que le vieil homme meure en nous, ou que nous mourions à nous-mêmes pour que Christ vive en nous. En Christ, la mort fut en même temps le crucifiement de toute volonté propre, il se donna tout entier à l'obéissance qu'il avait vouée à Dieu son Père ; (Matthieu 26.36 et suivants) c'est pour cela que son sacrifice fut accepté et que sa sainte vie triompha de la mort.

Maintenant, unis à lui par une foi vivante, les membres de Christ voient s'accomplir en eux les mêmes expériences que leur Chef a faites, et ainsi sa mort devient, par sa puissance, la mort de tous.
