Tous ces sentiments et ces actes, résultats de la première lettre de l'apôtre, avaient pour objet le pécheur scandaleux jusqu'alors toléré dans l'Eglise. (1Corinthiens 5)

Pour leur défense (Grec : apologie), les Corinthiens s'étaient empressés de l'exclure : ils montrèrent par là leur indignation pour son crime, leur crainte des jugements de Dieu, leur ardent désir de sa grâce, leur zèle pour sa gloire et pour la pureté de la profession de la foi ; de là, l'exemplaire punition dont le pécheur fut l'objet. C'est ainsi que les Eglises se réveillent et prouvent que la vie de Dieu est en elles.

Non pas tous, sans doute, ni au premier abord, puisqu'il avait fallu la première lettre pour les réveiller ; mais ils s'étaient si bien purifiés, que l'apôtre leur en tient compte largement.
