D'après les Chroniques, ils étaient au nombre de cinq, ce qui fait monter à cinq cents hommes la troupe armée qui devait agir. Elle se composait des Kéréthiens ou garde royale ordinaire, et des coureurs, chargés de porter au loin les ordres royaux. Voir 10.25, note. Il les fit venir, certainement dans le plus grand secret, pour s'assurer de leur fidélité et leur communiquer son plan. D'après les Chroniques ils furent en même temps chargés par lui de sonder les dispositions des Lévites et des chefs de famille israélites dans tout le pays d'Israël, et de leur donner rendez-vous à Jérusalem, probablement pour une des grandes fêtes, afin que leur arrivée simultanée n'excitât pas de soupçons.
