World English Bible The king of Assyria found conspiracy in Hoshea; for he had sent messengers to So king of Egypt, and offered no tribute to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year: therefore the king of Assyria shut him up, and bound him in prison.

So : le premier roi de la vingt-cinquième dynastie, qui était de race éthiopienne ; le Sabakou des Grecs, Schabaké des inscriptions égyptiennes, Schabé des inscriptions cunéiformes. Le nom hébreu So peut se lire Sévé ou Sava, ce qui rapproche sa prononciation de celui que l'on trouve dans les documents profanes.

L'enferma... On pourrait voir ici l'indication anticipée de la fin de la guerre quant à la personne d'Osée, et dans ce qui suit, le détail de la manière dont cette fin a été amenée. Mais une inscription assyrienne raconte que Salmanasar cita Osée à comparaître devant lui à Ninive et là l'emprisonna, après quoi il ne reparut plus. Il faut donc admettre que tout ce qui suit, l'envahissement du royaume d'Israël, le siège et la prise de Samarie, la déportation des dix tribus, eurent lieu en l'absence, mais pourtant nominalement sous le règne d'Osée, à qui l'on n'avait pas donné de successeur ; voir Maspéro, page 390.
