Bien que la destruction du royaume, constitué alors de dix tribus, soit assez brièvement retracée dans la Parole, ces versets la décrivent largement, et en mentionnent les raisons.

Cette destruction était en fait opérée par le Tout-Puissant : l'Assyrie était bien le sujet de Sa colère, Esa 10:5.

Ceux qui font pénétrer le péché dans un pays ou dans une famille, introduisent véritablement la peste, et ils devront répondre à Dieu de tout le dommage qu'ils auront causé. Si la méchanceté visible du monde est immense, la situation est encore pire pour les péchés secrets, les mauvaises pensées, les désirs et les buts malsains de l'humanité. Certains péchés manifestes sont vraiment infâmes ; mais l'ingratitude, la négligence, l'hostilité envers Dieu, l'idolâtrie et l'impiété qui en découlent, sont bien plus néfastes.

Sans l'abandon d'une mauvaise conduite, et sans le respect des statuts divins, il ne peut y avoir de véritable piété ; mais un tel sentiment ne peut jaillir qu'en se soumettant à la Parole de Dieu, seul moyen pour que ce Dernier détourne Sa colère contre l'impiété et le manque de droiture, et qu'Il nous accorde Sa miséricorde en Jésus-Christ !
