Le sens est : Si la violation de la loi, qui ordonne la punition du meurtrier, a des conséquences fâcheuses, ce sera sur moi qu'elles tomberont, et non pas sur toi et sur le pays. Cette parole peut être interprétée ou comme un vœu : Que ce soit sur moi et non sur toi que retombent les conséquences ! ou comme une expression de crainte : Toi en tout cas tu n'en souffriras pas ; mais moi je vais être exposée à la vengeance de mes parents irrités. Le verset suivant parle plutôt pour cette seconde explication.
