- L'Eglise est celle dont Gaïus faisait partie.

- Une variante (minusc., Vulgate) porte : "J'aurais écrit à l'Eglise, mais..." On a supposé qu'il s'agissait de notre seconde épître canonique. (Comparer Introduction) Le contexte (versets 5-8,10) indique plutôt qu'il s'agit d'une lettre destinée à recommander les prédicateurs itinérants.

Ce Diotrèphe paraît avoir été revêtu d'une charge dans l'Eglise. Il refusait sans doute de communiquer à l'Eglise les lettres de l'apôtre. Celui-ci informe Gaïus de l'envoi de la lettre. On peut croire que Diotrèphe, non seulement repoussait les missionnaires recommandés par Jean, (verset 10) mais s'élevait contre l'autorité de l'apôtre. Jean peint en un seul mot les secrets mobiles de Diotrèphe qui sont ceux de tous les chefs de parti, de tous les fondateurs de sectes : "Il aime à être le premier." L'orgueil, une vaniteuse ambition, voilà le sentiment qui cause la plupart des divisions dans l'Eglise.

Il faut veiller à la fois sur notre cœur, comme sur nos paroles. Diotrèphe n’était animé que par la fierté et l'ambition.

Il est regrettable de ne pas pratiquer le bien que l’on est censé faire ; il est encore pire de vouloir entraver ceux qui veulent le pratiquer !

Les avertissements et les conseils donnés dans ce texte seront probablement acceptés plus facilement s'ils sont donnés avec amour.

« Poursuivez » le bien, car celui qui le pratique et qui prend plaisir en cela, est né de Dieu. C'est en vain que ceux qui exercent le mal prétendent ou se glorifient de connaître Dieu. Ne cherchons pas à imiter l’orgueilleux, l’égoïste, celui qui a de mauvais desseins, bien que l’on puisse parfois, considérant leur rang ou leur pouvoir, chercher à suivre leur exemple ; soyons plutôt de bons serviteurs de Dieu, marchons dans l'amour, suivant l'exemple de notre Seigneur !
