Edom sera trahi d'abord par ses alliés, puis par ses amis, enfin par ses protégés. Les premiers lui refuseront leur secours ; les seconds le paieront de belles paroles ; les derniers se joindront perfidement à ses ennemis.

T'ont chassé jusqu'à la frontière. Il s'agit sans doute des ambassadeurs d'Edom envoyés pour demander un prompt secours à ses alliés, et que ceux-ci renvoient honteusement en les faisant reconduire à la frontière. Plusieurs rapportent ces mots : t'ont chassé..., à Edom lui-même, qui, fuyant chez ses voisins, se voit refuser un asile.

Ont voulu t'égarer et ont réussi. Ils t'ont donné le change sur leurs véritables dispositions.

Ceux qui mangeaient ton pain. Ce sont les tribus voisines qui vivaient sous sa protection et profitaient de ses gains. Faisant alliance avec l'ennemi, elles lui facilitent perfidement l'envahissement du pays. Comparez Psaumes 41.10.

Il n'y a point en lui d'intelligence. Dans son aveugle confiance en lui-même, Edom ne s'est point douté de toutes ces perfidies et a négligé les précautions les plus élémentaires ; il était comme frappé de vertige.
