Malgré les succès qu'il remportait à Corinthe, Paul avait sans doute besoin d'être encouragé par ces divines paroles, car il était entouré de dangers et pénétré du sentiment de sa faiblesse. (1Corinthiens 2.3.)

C'est pendant la nuit (ces mots se lisent avant en vision dans Sin., B, après dans d'autres manuscrits Blass les retranche en se fondant sur A) dans une vision où lui apparut le Seigneur, que Paul entendit ces paroles. (Comparer Actes 16. 9 ; 23.11.)

Elles lui donnaient deux raisons puissantes de ne point craindre, de ne point se taire, mais de parler : Je suis avec toi, lui dit le Seigneur (Comparer Esaïe 41.10 ; Jérémie 1.8) ; et : un grand peuple est à moi dans cette ville de Corinthe.

Ce peuple, c'étaient des Juifs encore incrédules ou indifférents, des païens encore inconvertis. Mais Dieu les connaissait, comme lui appartenant dans l'ordre de sa grâce ; ils étaient "ordonnés pour la vie éternelle." (Jean 10.16 ; 11.52.)

Il fallait donc que Paul les amenât au Sauveur, et il savait maintenant que son œuvre ne serait pas vaine.
