Le grand principe ici posé par l'apôtre, et qui se fondait sur une parole du Maître, (Matthieu 22.21) suppose deux choses sans lesquelles il pourrait devenir dangereux :

1° Que celui qui s'en prévaut pour refuser obéissance à l'autorité ait un commandement clair et positif de Dieu sur lequel il se fonde. Tel était évidemment le cas des disciples de Jésus. (Actes 1.8 ; Matthieu 28.19,20 ; Marc 16.15 ; Jean 20.21) Christ avait ordonné, nulle autorité humaine n'avait le droit de défendre.

2° Que ceux qui opposent à un gouvernement cette résistance passive soient résignés d'avance à en subir patiemment toutes les conséquences.

C'est ce que firent toujours les apôtres. Leur principe n'a donc rien de révolutionnaire.

Aussi peuvent-ils en appeler directement au jugement de Dieu et même au jugement du tribunal où ils comparaissent : Jugez devant Dieu.

Bien plus, ils répéteront ce principe, sous la forme d'une affirmation catégorique, après avoir fait l'expérience des dures conséquences qui devaient en découler pour eux. (Actes 5.29)
