Actes 5.39

Vous ne pourrez les (Sin., B, A, D) détruire : pronom au masculin pluriel se rapportant à ces hommes, (verset 38) le texte reçu porte : la détruire, l'œuvre.

D présente des variantes notables : (verset 38) laissez-les, ne souillant pas vos mains, et, (verset 39) vous ne pourrez les détruire, ni vous ni les rois ni les tyrans : abstenez vous donc de ces hommes.

- Le célèbre conseil de Gamaliel a été vanté par les uns comme un oracle de la sagesse et condamné par les autres avec injustice.

Pour le comprendre, il faut se replacer dans la situation.

Gamaliel, pharisien sincère et tolérant, avait devant lui le sanhédrin dont les membres fanatisés et pleins de fureur, délibéraient de faire périr les disciples (verset 33) comme ils avaient crucifié le Maître. Gamaliel veut les sauver ; et son discours contient l'argumentation la plus propre à atteindre ce but.

Après avoir rappelé les leçons de l'histoire, il invoque la provid ence divine qui ne permet pas que de faux prophètes puissent subsister longtemps en Israël, mais qui donnera plein succès, envers et contre tous, à une œuvre qui sera de Dieu.

S'opposer à une telle œuvre serait commettre l'impiété de faire la guerre à Dieu !

Cette confiance en Dieu, cette foi en sa vérité, cette crainte de s'opposer à sa volonté, étaient d'autant plus respectables et louables qu'elles étaient plus rares aux jours de Gamaliel.

Il faut reconnaître aussi que comme magistrat, il n'avait rien de mieux à dire et à faire. Calvin blâme son attitude, mais le jugement du Réformateur est inspiré par le faux principe que l'erreur doit être combattue par le glaive.

- Quand, d'autre part, le chrétien, individuellement est appelé à juger de l'erreur ou de la vérité d'une cause, L'attitude de Gamaliel ne peut lui servir de modèle.

En effet,

1° Gamaliel applique à un cas particulier ce qui n'est vrai qu'en général. Si, en dernière fin, il est certain que la vérité triomphera de L'erreur et que le règne et la gloire appartiendront à Dieu et à son Christ, il n'en est pas toujours ainsi dans les phases diverses de la lutte. Le succès, dans ce monde, n'est point une preuve infaillible qu'une œuvre est de Dieu, ou l'insuccès qu'elle est des hommes.

2° C'est une vue fausse et contraire à la conscience que de prendre, en présence d'un mouvement religieux, une position neutre, passive, et de dire : attendons la fin.

Puisque Dieu a confié à ses serviteurs le dépôt sacré de la vérité, ils doivent examiner toute entreprise religieuse à la lumière de la parole divine, s'assurer si elle est de Dieu ou des hommes, puis la rejeter et la combattre vigoureusement ou l'embrasser et la défendre au péril de leur vie. C'est ce que faisaient les apôtres.

Gr ils furent persuadés, ou ils lui obéirent, c'est-à-dire qu'ils se désistèrent de leur dessein de faire périr les apôtres. (verset 33) Ainsi le discours de Gamaliel atteignit son but.
