World English Bible Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, including those who pierced him. All the tribes of the earth will mourn over him. Even so, Amen.

Jean annonce la venue du Seigneur (versets 7,8) dans les termes mêmes employés par son Maître. (Matthieu 24.30 ; 26.64) Tout le sujet de son livre est compris dans cette pensée : il s'ouvre par ce mot : voici il vient, et il se clora par ce même mot : Je viens bientôt (Apocalypse 22.20) La première parole est empruntée à Daniel 7.13.

Jean ajoute au tableau que Daniel 7.13 avait tracé de l'apparition du Messie ce détail saisissant : et tout œil le verra, et ceux mêmes qui l'ont percé. Il s'inspire d'une parole de Zacharie 12.10, qu'il cite et commente ailleurs (Jean 19.37) et dans laquelle l'Eternel dit : "Je répandrai sur la maison de David et sur les habitants de Jérusalem un esprit de grâce et de supplication et ils regarderont a moi qu'ils ont percé" dans la personne du Messie ; "ils mèneront deuil sur lui comme on mène deuil sur un fils unique..."

Ces paroles ont été prononcées par Jésus. (Matthieu 24.30) Elles font de celles de Zacharie (note précédente) une application plus générale et en modifient le sens. Zacharie annonçait en effet qu'Israël se repentirait de la rejection et du crucifiement du Messie. Mais comme à la seconde venue du Christ, il sera trop tard pour se repentir, ce moment sera terrible pour les impénitents ; d'autant plus terrible que le Juge portera encore les marques de souffrances dont ils n'auront pas profité et d'un amour qu'ils auront méprisé. Ils se frapperont la poitrine à cause de lui, en signe de désespoir. De plus, le jugement s'étendant à l'humanité entière, ce seront toutes les tribus de la terre qui se frapperont la poitrine. Il y a ainsi deux manières de contempler Celui que l'humanité a crucifié : l'une avec repentance, confiance, amour, l'autre avec impénitence et désespoir. Tous les hommes verront au jour du jugement Celui qu'ils ont percé ; et ceux qui n'auront pas "mené deuil sur lui, comme on mène deuil sur un fils unique," se frapperont la poitrine à cause de lui, dans l'amertume de la révolte.
