L'Alpha et l'Oméga sont la première et la dernière lettre de l'alphabet grec. Cette dénomination est expliquée, dans le texte reçu, par les mots : le commencement et la fin, qui ne sont pas authentiques, mais qui se retrouvent dans le passage Apocalypse 22.13, d'où ils auront été transportés ici. Elle ne constitue pas une définition abstraite et métaphysique de l'éternité de Dieu, mais caractérise son action qui commence et achève toutes choses, qui est le principe et la fin de la création, de tout le développement de l'humanité, de l'œuvre du salut dans l'Eglise et dans les individus. Comme tout procède de Dieu, tout doit aboutir à l'accomplissement de sa volonté éternelle, sans que rien puisse s'y opposer, et c'est à lui enfin que toute gloire sera rendue. (Esaïe 41.4 ; 44.6 ; 48.12)

La désignation de Dieu comme Celui qui est, et qui était et qui vient, se trouve déjà à verset 4 : ici, elle sert à confirmer la parfaite certitude du grand événement annoncé à verset 7. (Oui, Amen !) Cette parole rappelle la solennelle déclaration des prophètes : "Ainsi a dit l'Eternel." Le Dominateur souverain (nos versions traduisent le Tout Puissant, mais le mot grec exprime l'exercice du pouvoir) est le terme par lequel les Septante ont traduit "l'Eternel des armées," dans Esaïe 44.6, et "le Dieu des armées," dans Amos 3.13 ; 4.13. Il se trouve neuf fois dans l'Apocalypse.
