Chapitre 11.

1 à 14 Ordre de mesurer le temple. Les deux témoins. Jérusalem frappée par un tremblement de terre.

Grec : Et il me fut donné un roseau semblable à une verge ; on se servait de roseaux pour mesurer. (Apocalypse 21.15 ; comparez Ezéchiel 40.3)

L'addition du texte reçu : et l'ange se tenait debout en disant, ne se lit que dans Q et quelques autres documents. Jean ne dit ni qui parle ni par qui lui fut donné le roseau. Mais, d'après les versets verset 3 et suivants, on peut admettre que c'est Christ lui-même. (Comparer Apocalypse 10.8) Ce qui va suivre se rattache étroitement à Apocalypse 10. Les paroles et les actes mentionnés font partie de la vision.

Lève-toi : cet ordre n'implique pas que le voyant fût assis jusque-là, (comparez Apocalypse 10.8,9) mais qu'il doit se mettre à l'œuvre, passer de l'inaction à l'activité. L'acte symbolique qui lui est commandé, il l'exécute dans la vision, (Amos 9.1) non en réalité. (1Rois 22.11 ; Jérémie 19.1 et suivants, Ezéchiel 4 et Ezéchiel 5)

Mesure le temple et l'autel, non en vue d'une future reconstruction (Ezéchiel 40.3 et suivants ; comparez Apocalypse 21.15), ni pour les vouer à la destruction, (Esaïe 34.11 ; Lamentations 2.8 ; Amos 7.7 et suivants) mais pour les conserver en traçant une ligne de démarcation entre eux et le parvis extérieur abandonné aux nations. (verset 2)

Le temple est le sanctuaire proprement dit, la maison qui contenait le lieu très saint et le lieu saint, et l'autel mentionné à côté du temple doit être l'autel des holocaustes (comparez Apocalypse 8.3,4, note) et non l'autel des parfums.

Ceux qui y adorent, grec en lui : ce pronom désigne le temple, suivant les uns, il s'applique à l'autel, suivant les autres il s'agirait de ceux qui sont en prières dans le parvis autour de l'autel. Ce parvis est le parvis intérieur (1Rois 6.36 ; comparez Jérémie 36.10), désigné dans 2Chroniques 4.9 comme le parvis des sacrificateurs. Comparer Josèphe, Antiq. XIII, 13, 5.

Ceux que le voyant se représente en prières peuvent être des fidèles de toute condition, car, sous la nouvelle Alliance, tous sont sacrificateurs. (Apocalypse 1.6 ; 1Pierre 2.9) Ils forment le peuple de Dieu, l'Israël véritable ; et, à ce titre, ils seront préservés, quand s'accompliront les événements annoncés à verset 2.

Le temple n'est mentionné que parce qu'il leur sert de lieu de réunion dans la vision, ou parce qu'eux-mêmes constituent le vrai temple de Dieu. (1Pierre 2.4,5 ; 1Corinthiens 3.10-17) L'auteur ne peut vouloir dire que le temple de Jérusalem ne serait point détruit, puisque Jésus avait clairement prédit le contraire (Marc 13.2)

Le sens de la prophétie est que l'Église judéo-chrétienne, l'assemblée des serviteurs de Dieu qui se trouveront dans Jérusalem au moment de sa destruction, seront sauvés ; que cet Israël selon l'esprit subsistera, quand commenceront les "temps des païens" et quand le peuple juif cessera d'exister comme nation indépendante.

L'état de l'Église est représenté par les mesures du temple de Dieu. (Apocalypse 11:1,2)

Ce passage prophétique concernant la mesure du temple, semble se reporter à la vision d'Ézéchiel. Le but de cette « mesure » semble être la préservation de l'Église, en période de trouble général ; il peut s’agir aussi de Ses épreuves, ou de Sa réforme.

Les adorateurs doivent être également mesurés ; ils doivent, dans toute leur adoration, faire de la Gloire de Dieu, leur but final, et de Sa parole, leur règle de vie. Ceux qui sont sur le parvis extérieur du temple, adorant avec un cœur hypocrite, seront considérés comme Ses ennemis...

Dieu aura un temple et un autel dans le monde, jusqu'à la fin des temps. Il s’intéresse particulièrement à Son temple. La ville sacrée, l'Église visible, est foulée aux pieds ; Elle est remplie d'idolâtres, d'incroyants et d'hypocrites. Mais ces désolations sont en fait limitées : Elle sera finalement délivrée de toutes ses épreuves !

      41 Four tables were on this side, and four tables on that side, by the side of the gate; eight tables, whereupon they killed [the sacrifices].

      43 The hooks, a handbreadth long, were fastened within all around: and on the tables was the flesh of the offering.
      44 Outside of the inner gate were rooms for the singers in the inner court, which was at the side of the north gate; and their prospect was toward the south; one at the side of the east gate having the prospect toward the north.
      45 He said to me, This room, whose prospect is toward the south, is for the priests, the keepers of the duty of the house;
      46 and the room whose prospect is toward the north is for the priests, the keepers of the duty of the altar: these are the sons of Zadok, who from among the sons of Levi come near to Yahweh to minister to him.
      47 He measured the court, one hundred cubits long, and a hundred cubits broad, foursquare; and the altar was before the house.
      48 Then he brought me to the porch of the house, and measured each post of the porch, five cubits on this side, and five cubits on that side: and the breadth of the gate was three cubits on this side, and three cubits on that side.
