World English Bible Their dead bodies will be in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified.

Rester sans sépulture était considéré, chez les Juifs et chez d'autres peuples, comme le comble de l'ignominie. (1Samuel 17.44 ; Psaumes 79.2 et suivants ; Jérémie 7.33)

La grande cité est l'épithète ordinaire de Babylone ; (Apocalypse 14.8 ; 16.19 ; 17.15,18 ; 18.2,10, etc.) elle est appliquée ici à Jérusalem, parce que celle-ci a été "donnée aux nations qui la foulent aux pieds," (verset 2) et que ses habitants juifs, par leur incrédulité, se sont assimilés aux païens.

C'est aussi pour cela qu'elle est appelée Sodome et Égypte dans un sens spirituel (grec spirituellement), c'est-à-dire d'une manière conforme à l'esprit de la prophétie, qui doit être étendue symboliquement. D'autres donnent à cet adverbe le sens de : conformément à l'esprit qui anime la grande cité. Les anciens prophètes appelaient Jérusalem Sodome. (Esaïe 1.9,10 ; Ezéchiel 16.46-49 ; Jérémie 23.14) Le nom d'Egypte symbolise l'opposition la plus absolue à Dieu et à son règne.

Enfin la proposition : où leur Seigneur (Sin. : le Seigneur) aussi a été crucifié désigne d'une manière indubitable Jérusalem, car elle mentionne le fait historique du crucifiement de Jésus (verbe à l'aoriste) ; elle établit de plus un parallèle entre ce fait et la mort des deux témoins : ils ont été traités comme leur Seigneur ; c'est ce qu'implique le mot : aussi.
