Ce prélude, (verset 2 et suivants) où retentissent des chants dans le ciel, rappelle des descriptions semblables qui ouvrent la vision des sept sceaux (Apocalypse 4.9-11) et celle des sept trompettes. (Apocalypse 8.3-5) La gloire de Dieu y est exaltée au moment où ses jugements vont s'exercer.

La mer de verre qui, d'après Apocalypse 4.6, est devant le trône de Dieu et symbolise sa grâce, sert de refuge à ceux qui sont vainqueurs de la bête (Apocalypse 13.1 et suivants) et de son image (Apocalypse 13.14 et suivants) et du nombre de son nom. (Apocalypse 13.17) Le texte reçu (minusc.) porte, avant et du nombre de son nom, les mots : et de sa marque. (Grec : vainqueurs, de manière à être hors de toute atteinte de la bête, etc., soustraits à toute communion avec elle.) Ici la mer de verre est mêlée de feu, signe des jugements qui vont s'exercer.

Plusieurs interprètes admettent que l'auteur pensait à la mer Rouge, sur les bords de laquelle se tenaient les Israélites quand ils chantèrent le cantique de Moïse pour célébrer leur délivrance Cette allusion n'est pas certaine, malgré la mention du cantique de Moïse à verset 3 et des réminiscences des plaies d'Egypte dans les fléaux décrits à Apocalypse 16. Les vainqueurs tiennent les (Q. minusc.) harpes de Dieu, bien connues d'après 1Chroniques 16.42. Les vingt-quatre anciens ont de même chacun sa harpe. (Apocalypse 5.8 ; comparez Apocalypse 14.2)
