World English Bible I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and they opened books. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. Les morts, les grands et les petits, c'est-à-dire tous, sans exception. (Romains 14.10 ; 2Corinthiens 5.10) Il n'est pas parlé des saints qui avaient régné mille ans (verset 4) et avaient été délivres de l'attaque de Satan. (verset 9) L'auteur pense probablement à ceux qu'il appelait : (verset 5) "les autres morts." Ils se tenaient devant le trône (Sin., A, Q. versions). Le texte reçu (minusc.) porte devant Dieu.

Comparer Daniel 7.10 ; Malachie 3.16 ; Esdras 6.22, Apoc. de Baruch 24 :1. Ces livres multiples, où sont consignées les actions des hommes, sont opposés au livre unique de la vie.

Apocalypse 22.12. Le principe du jugement selon les œuvres (Romains 2.6) subsiste même avec le salut par grâce ; car les œuvres, qui comprennent la vie entière, les sentiments du cœur comme les actes extérieurs, démontrent la régénération et la sanctification par laquelle l'âme doit passer pour posséder la vie éternelle. Tel est aussi l'enseignement de Jésus dans Matthieu 16.27, de Paul dans 2Corinthiens 5.10.
