9 à 17 Le cinquième et le sixième sceau.

Grec : Pour le témoignage qu'ils avaient, ce qui peut s'entendre soit du témoignage de Jésus dans l'Évangile, qu'ils avaient reçu, soit du témoignage qu'ils avaient eux-mêmes rendu à Jésus. (Comparer Apocalypse 1.2, note.)

Le premier sens est le plus probable ; Jésus est fréquemment appelé le témoin. (Apocalypse 1.5 ; 3.14)

La vision de l'apôtre, à l'ouverture du cinquième sceau est très émouvante : il voit en effet sous l'autel, les âmes des martyrs ; elles se tiennent au pied de l'autel, dans les cieux, aux pieds de Christ.

Les persécuteurs ne peuvent tuer que le corps ; ils ne peuvent rien faire de plus : l'âme vit toujours ! Dieu a réservé une bonne place, dans un monde meilleur, pour ceux qui sont fidèles jusqu'à la mort. Ce n'est pas leur propre mort, mais le sacrifice de Christ qui leur assure leur entrée dans le ciel. Ces âmes ont souffert à cause de la Parole de Dieu. Le meilleur des hommes peut donner sa vie pour cette cause : la foi dans la Parole de Dieu, ainsi qu’une confession inaltérable de cette ferme espérance. Les âmes sous l’autel, soumettent leur cause à Celui à qui appartient la vengeance.

Le Seigneur est le « consolateur » de ses serviteurs affligés, et leur sang est précieux à Sa vue. Alors que la mesure du péché des persécuteurs augmente, il en est de même du nombre des serviteurs de Christ, persécutés et martyrisés. Quand cette mesure sera à son comble, Dieu enverra la tribulation à ceux qui les auront tourmentés, ainsi qu'une félicité et un repos sans faille, à ceux qui auront connu le martyr pour Christ.
