Colossiens 2.1-23

Souvent l'apôtre en appelle à l'expérience personnelle que les chrétiens ont faite de la vérité évangélique pour les y affermir davantage. (Galates 3.1 et suivants ; Ephésiens 1.13 ; 2.11 et suivants ; Ephésiens 4.20 et suivants ; 1Thessaloniciens 2.13)

Ce qu'ils ont reçu, ce qui leur a été enseigné, ce n'est pas un système religieux sur Christ, ou la doctrine de Christ, mais Christ lui-même (verset 6 ; comparez Ephésiens 4.20-24), Christ tout entier, ce qui est ici exprimé par tous ses noms dans leur pleine signification : le Christ, Jésus, le Seigneur. (verset 6)

Mais cela ne suffit pas à l'apôtre ; dans son ardent désir de voir ses frères préservés de l'erreur, il accumule ici tous les termes qui peuvent exprimer leur affermissement et leurs progrès en Christ.

Marcher en lui, par la communion avec lui et par la conduite de chaque jour ; être enracinés et fondés en lui (voir sur cette double image Ephésiens 3.18), et ainsi affermis par la foi, qui est le lien de notre union avec lui (le texte reçu dit : affermis dans la foi ; cette leçon a pour elle d'importants manuscrits et est adaptée par beaucoup d'exégètes) ; enfin abonder en lui, faire de continuels progrès dans sa communion (d'autres, selon la variante du texte reçu, traduisent : en elle, la foi ; d'autres enfin lisent : "abondant dans l'action de grâces") ; tout cela inspire à l'âme une joyeuse reconnaissance, qui s'exprime par des actions de grâces.
